About The Yacht Club —

Our Mission —

The Yacht Club is committed to helping create positive growth for at-risk youth and young adults through the game of dodgeball, workshops and mentorships.

We work with local parks and their staff to help reinvigorate recreation centers in Los Angeles while encouraging young, socially minded peers to join our efforts in creating strong communities around the United States.

The Problem —

With budget cuts swirling and states grappling with how to best respond, class sizes have gotten larger while art, music and sports programs have gotten smaller. Now, access to City Parks and Public Services are beginning to diminish including the access to the necessary equipment in gyms, maintenance of the fields and after school youth programs for children. While these cutbacks may seem minimal now, the effect they will play in the future of these communities and the children within them will be grim –whether that be in relation to their future health or the development of social skills necessary to become a productive and proactive part of the community.

Without proper funding these centers are being prevented from providing these necessities and in doing so have deflated their philanthropic potential. The Yacht Club unites to bolster these centers by helping them do what they were created to do –provide, shape and create.

Our Contribution —

The Yacht Club aims to close these gaps by providing volunteers, funding and youth programs of our own.

For instance, our open dodgeball leagues not only serve as a means to rally and empower the 20-somethings of the surrounding community to get involved, but also help to generate some funding for our youth programs while providing an effective vehicle for us to engage and match potential role models and mentors.

We also seek collaboration with LA City Parks and Recreation centers and other nonprofits to assist with programs like Summer Night Lights and the Friday Night Extreme teens programs– anti-gang initiatives that provide an alternative for other devious shenanigans by keeping parks open after dark.

While the purpose of these activities and programs is to help cultivate creative and constructive hobbies that promote positive growth, The Yacht Club also plans and promotes events. For instance, our annual toy drive –where this last year, community members donated over 300 toys to disadvantaged children of the area –or our collaboration with the Los Angeles Food Bank to provide the funding and support needed for the distribution of food for needy kids and families.
